Perhaps I am not quite as sensitive to chlorinated water, but I rarely notice any quality issues with Middlesex tap water.  We run it through a charcoal filter at the refrigerator for drinking/cooking.  But last night while doing dishes I got a very strong odor of what I assume to be chlorine.  I noticed it in the shower this morning as well.  I suspect there was some type of issue that may have forced an increase in water treatment.  I might poke around to see if American Water Company provides any details.

I just got off of the telephone with American Water.  They have no web page to give current status of water service/quality (that seems like a good opportunity for improvement for them).  The customer service representative did tell me that they are in the process of changing to a new water purification process and that the changeover is resulting in increased chlorination that may result in poor odor or taste.  They suggest letting drinking water sit in a nonmetallic container for several minutes - this should resolve the odor/taste issues.

My personal recommendation is Poland Spring (or similar).
